Blank Canvas Syndrome?

Make Cringe-Worthy ART!

Hello There Creative Peep,

Blank Canvas Syndrome is when you have an irrational fear of starting a new painting and you feel like the blank canvas is staring you down.

Been there?

It's a real condition. But I just made up the term for it.

If you struggle with getting started or you have a fear of making bad art, you are NOT ALONE in this.

This is very common among artists.

And for THIS reason, I often tell artists that it's so important to have an informal practice where you test out your ideas first in an informal way. That way you can see what works and what doesn't.

AND if you don't like it, you can throw it away. Or start over.

If you make something that you actually like, you can try it later on a canvas.

Zero pressure. Zero stress.

Then you are not freaking out with messing up that beautiful canvas AND you can actually make progress in building skills that you need to become better as an artist.

Having an informal practice takes some of that perfectionism and shoves it out the door.

The goal is to get out of your head!!!

The point is to just start. And LET GO of the end product!!!

When you have an informal practice, you simply bi-pass the black canvas until you build the skills you need to make a better painting.

And...

Nothing is LOST when it comes to experimenting with your art style.

You can work on loose paper. Like what I teach inside of Sketches on Scraps (One of my favorite courses by the way.)

Or... you can work in an art journal. (Check out the bottom of this email if you want to get an AMAZING DEAL on my art journaling Bundle.)

It doesn't really matter as long as you put in the practice and do the work.

Because you have to make the cringe-worthy art BEFORE you make the finished masterpiece. (See photo above to see my cringe-worthy art.)

If you want support with your informal practice, check out my free course, 100 Days of Imperfect Practice.

Happy Painting,

Wendy Brightbill

And What to Do About It... Hey There Artist, Have you ever felt like there MUST be something wrong with you because you seem to burn out quicker than most people? You start a challenge, launch a course or even plan out your collection and find yourself burning out on the task before you ever reach the finish line. What is wrong with me? Why can't I finish it? Or you make the art and have no energy left for marketing it? This is a common problem that I see happening for so many artists. And...

Here's WHY. Hello Creative Peep, After talking to a multitude of artists over the last decade, I have learned how to listen. And this idea that creativity is frivolous seems to be a common theme or struggle. As creative souls, I know that we perceive the world differently than most people. We tend to be highly sensitive people who can find it difficult to cope with the world around us (AT TIMES). It's hard to make space for creativity when all of the necessities are screaming for our...

Here is WHY! Hello Creative Peep, Last Friday night was my favorite Art Show EVER! It wasn't because sales were through the roof. Although, I did sell 6 paintings. No, the success that I felt was internal. It was different than any other art show that I have EVER had. I feel like I am still on an emotional high from it. Sigh! If only I could bottle it up and give you some. You see, I have had plenty of art shows. Some of them major flops! Let's just face it. Art Shows CAN BE a LOT of work....
