Creative Nomad? Wander With Purpose!

And Build Skills as You Go...

Dear Creative Peep,

Are you a creative nomad with no recognizable style? I get it. Because I used to be one myself!

For years I had a difficult time committing to any one style.

I used to be a creative nomad, meaning I tried every style, genre and expression out there. I had to try all the things before I started to figure out what I really loved.

I craved freedom as a creative. if you are a creative nomad, I bet that's what you love too.

So I have proposition for you...

What if instead of wandering aimlessly, you wandered with purpose?

Hear me out.

What if instead of simply rolling the dice each day and going wherever inspiration takes you, you actually had a purpose in the direction that you went?

So let's say that you are really drawn to graphic shapes in art. What if you do a series of work that is all about learning how to break your subject matter down into the simple shapes that you see?

Or let's say that you want looser lines in your work. What if you do a series of drawings that focus mostly on loosening up your line work?

Do you know what I have found after working with countless artists?

There is so much power in focus when it comes to your creative practice. Sometimes, all it takes to get better as an artist and take your art to the next level is to simply focus on getting better on one skill at a time.

For example, if you want to get better at form in your art, make a series of work with that particular purpose in mind. Try starting with around 30 pieces. I bet you would be surprised by the end of that challenge how your sense of form has improved.

You see, we ten to get lost when we don't have a purpose in our art practice.

Even in your creative wanderings, you can be building the skills to become an amazing artist!!!

Try it out and let me know how it goes!

Make Cringe-Worthy ART! Hello There Creative Peep, Blank Canvas Syndrome is when you have an irrational fear of starting a new painting and you feel like the blank canvas is staring you down. Been there? It's a real condition. But I just made up the term for it. If you struggle with getting started or you have a fear of making bad art, you are NOT ALONE in this. This is very common among artists. And for THIS reason, I often tell artists that it's so important to have an informal practice...

My Story Hello There Creative Peep, When do you know that it's time to make a creative shift? When you have exhausted everything that there is to say about something. This might show up through a feeling of not being satisfied with your work or just pure boredom. You lose the joy for the process of painting. You should be on fire to jump out of bed in the mornings to get back into your studio in order to paint! So what would make you excited to paint again? Maybe you need a change of scenery?...

Indication Signs/ Symptoms Hello Creative Peep, Something that I have learned from working with over 8,500 artists is that we don't ALWAYS know when we are stuck. But I can tell you that when I am in a state of creative flow, everything just falls into place. Creating is effortless. I am inspired but not to the point of overwhelm. I have a focus in my art. Sharing and selling is a delight and not a chore. I don't have to try too hard. I am obsessed about the work that I am making, to the...
